Sun Safety Policy
Statement of intent
Our Nursery believes that a child's skin is particularly sensitive to the sun and needs to be protected appropriately to minimise sun damage.
Drinks are extremely important part of children's diets, especially during hot weather, as liquids can prevent dehydration.
Aim
We aim for all children to be appropriately protected from the sun. All parents are asked to provide sun protective hats from the beginning of the summer season until the end. This length of time may be extended for weather reasons, or parental preference.
Parents of all children in the setting are also asked to provide a drinking cup/bottle/ labelled clearly on the side and top with their child's name (all year round).
Methods
-
Children will be kept out of the midday sun, when the sun is at its most dangerous
- Shaded areas are provided in the garden
- Children will have access to drinking water /water bottles throughout the day and will be encouraged to drink water during the day to limit the risks of dehydration.
- Drinks will be taken on outings with the children on hot days if they are out for more than one hour.
- Before going outside during warm weather all children will have sun lotion (factor 30+) applied by Nursery staff (if parents would prefer to supply their own lotion please clearly label container and inform staff)
- Parents must apply sun lotion to their child's skin prior to coming to nursery, and staff will re-apply for them to exposed skin during the day.
- Parents/carers are also required to provide their child with appropriate light clothing for the summer weather, which should cover children’s shoulders during sunny days.
- Practical summer shoes are needed for each child so they can safely use the outdoor play equipment (flip flops are not suitable).
